Barrels Across Texas
Mission: Barrels Across Texas is an inaugural fundraising event bringing together our local art and wine communities. Artists in various media were invited to donate their time and talents to transform a wine barrel into a one-of-kind artwork. The barrels are being showcased at different venues in and around Austin to promote the Festival, taking place April 16-19, 2009. The barrels will be auctioned off live at an event after the Festival, on April 30th. Proceeds will benefit the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival, Dell Children’s Hospital, and the Capital Area Food Bank.

Texas Wineries? Yer Darn Tootin’
From the blog Boots in the Oven: “If you ain’t from ’round here, you might not know that Texas is a major producer of grapes. Wine grapes! Within just a few hours of Austin sit lots of adorable boutique wineries, some of them turning out products that are not just drinkable, but actually tasty.”
I guess that shouldn’t surprise me. I grew up a couple hours’ drive from vineyards in Missouri. If Missouri can do wine, why not Texas?

How the American Southwest Wine Region Works

What comes to mind when you think of the American Southwest? Old movie images of cowboys. Arid desert. Green mountain slopes. Sprawling cities with friendly, laid-back populations. Whatever you think of, you’re probably right: the American Southwest is incredibly diverse.
For the purposes of wine, the American Southwest region consists of six states: New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. (That’s according to the Southwest Wine Competition, held every year in Taos, NM [source: Toast of Taos].) That means the region encompasses immense geographic variety. You can find bamboo forest and rocky cliffs in the same national park in Texas, so just imagine what you’ll find in six large Western states [source: Big Bend National Park]:

Main St., Salado, TX 76571.
Artists and artisans throughout Texas and the southwest will line the grounds with beautiful works of oil, acrylics, watercolors, pastels and mixed media including woodwork, sculpture, jewelry, glassworks, metal work and handmade clothing. “Artists in Action” and live music by Paul Cox & Texas Accoustic, Harebilly, Brian Burns, and Richard Paul Thomas.
