Texas Hill Country Wineries Harvest Wine Trail, August 5-7 and 12-14, 2011

The harvest marks the end of the growing season and is the focus of seasonal celebrations.  For the wineries it is the beginning of early mornings, long days and late nights…the busiest time of year.  Come celebrate with us in the Texas Hill Country with the Harvest Wine Trail, August 5-7 and 12-14.  You will find winemakers and owners in the fields, on tractors, in the winery, covered in purple juice as their labor of love has truly begun.

Harvest is the season when wineries bring to the forefront those rarely seen vineyard and crush activities for wine enthusiasts to appreciate.  Ticket holders traverse the twenty-seven participating wineries sprinkled throughout the Hill Country debuting exciting new wines, watching and learning vineyard practices in motion, taking part in wine seminars or jumping feet first into a two ton grape stomp.  The wine trail weekends are yours to plan…no need to start at 6am with the harvest though.

New Texas Department of Agriculture Program Asks You to “GO TEXAN or Go Thirsty”

The Texas Department of Agriculture launched a new program called “GO TEXAN or Go Thirsty”, designed to promote local restaurants and retailers that carry Texas wines and support the Texas wine industry’s $1.7 billion impact on the state’s economy. The event was held at Jack Allen’s Kitchen in Oak Hill, a restaurant that prides itself on serving Texas wines and foods.

Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples said. “With the GO TEXAN or Go Thirsty program, we hope to continue raising awareness about the quality wines made right here in the Lone Star State.”

The new GO TEXAN or Go Thirsty Web page will list restaurants that serve Texas wines and will help connect local wineries with restaurants that want to offer Texas wine on their menus. The program also will provide GO TEXAN or Go Thirsty dining cards for consumers to share with restaurants as a thank-you for offering Texas wines or as a way to request Texas wines be added to their wine list.  GO TEXAN or Go Thirsty cards are available at wineries throughout the state and can be downloaded and printed from www.gotexanwine.org. The website also contains resources for restaurants interested in adding Texas wines to their lists.

More 2011 Lone Star International Wine Competition Available: Texas Grand Star Award Winners (Best of the Best for 2011)

The Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association hosted the 28th Annual Lone Star International Wine Competition (LSIWC) on June 6-7 at the Grapevine Convention Center.

Nearly 600 wines from around the world were judged in 30+ categories by a panel of restaurant owners, sommeliers, chefs and other wine experts from Texas.  This year’s co-chairs were Barbara Werley, M.S., Pappas Brothers Steakhouse’s Master Sommelier and Beverage Director; and Michael Zerbach, long time chair of the event and winner of the John E. Crosby, Jr. Award for his achievements in increasing the stature and visibility of the Lone Star Wine Competition awarded by the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association Board of Directors.

The Grand Star Award winners were determined on the second day of the competition in a “taste-off” of the gold medal winning and top scoring wines from the first day’s judging:
