Video: Texas Fredericksburg Wine Road Route 290 – Like Napa Valley in the 1970’s

Want a retro wine trip? Want to go someplace that’s like a travel back in time and place before Napa Valley and Sonoma wineries were mainstream when they were quaint, family run establishments? The wine was fine, but a lot of people didn’t know it yet. Well, you can actually have this great wine experience today where you can talk to and even share a glass of wine with winery principals: owners, winemakers, winegrowers.

Where is this place? Is it in a quaint village in southern France? Is it on the Pacific coast of Chile. Is it on the back roads of Washington State? No way! It’s right here in the Texas Hill Country on the Route 290 Wine Road (www.wineroad290.com).

This week’s episode features the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290, a group of nine wineries located in the Hill Country near the charming, historic town of Fredericksburg. The trail hosts food and wine pairing events throughout the year, such as Vino al Pastor featuring innovative Texas pork dishes at each winery.

Try to do this in Napa Valley today….Simply, you can’t. Come down, stop in and be a part of the evolving new world of Texas wine.

Day 3 On the Texas Hill Country Holiday Wine Trail: New Faces; Old Friends

The last day of the wine trail did not start until noon. This gave me an opportunity to post my article from the Day2 trail “ride” that stretched from Lampasas round the back side of Lake Buchanan and on to Spicewood. Once this was complete this morning, I had time to fill the deer feeder at our cottage and close it up until next week when we return. Then, I packed the car and Paco (our Hahn’s Macaw) and I hit the trail. We saved the southern Hill Country path for this last leg of the trail that started with the wineries west and in downtown Fredericksburg. We then traveled then down to Comfort then east to New Braunfels and then back to Houston in the evening.

A Twitter Tour of the Texas Hill Country Wine Road

This weekend I was kicking back and enjoying the Texas sunshine, filling up the deer feeder with corn, and putting out alfalfa for our wild critters on the Big Hill. It was also great to be able to tour of the Texas Hill Country wine and food scene….virtually that is, all from the comfort of my back porch swing. With my trusty Blackberry in hand, I was able to get a first hand account following Austin media and PR maven, Denise Fraser, via Twitter (www.twitter.com/denisefraser) complete with photos of the hot culinary action.

Hill Country Hot Spot: The Cabernet Grill, the Texas Wine Country Restaurant

The Cabernet Grill is in a storied space at Cotton Gin Village, just south of Fredericksburg, Texas. The preceding restaurant in this space languished, never reaching notoriety for its drink or cuisine, but within the past two years, this has all changed.

The restaurant at Cotton Gin Village was rebranded as the Cabernet Grill. Executive Chef Ross Burtwell totally revamped the menu specializing in fresh seafood along with tantalizing offerings of Angus beef and wild game for his Fredericksburg-area patrons. The restaurant has a knowledgeable, “Texas friendly” staff.  But, best of all, the Cabernet Grill can boast of the largest, restaurant-based Texas wine list available anywhere in the Texas Hill Country, and most likely anywhere.
