#VintageTweets: Hot Days and Cool #NZWine – Pegasus Bay Winery

This blog stems from my recent lunch (and above mentioned Instagram post) with Edward Donaldson, marketing director of long-time family owned Pegasus Bay Winery in New Zealand. We did this at Backstreet Cafe that included a visit and taste by one of my favorite Houston sommelier, Sean Beck.

The Donaldson family have been seriously involved in wine since the early 1970’s and were pioneers of local grape growing and wine making (click here for video).

Most Americans only know New Zealand wines through the modern phenomenon of Sauvignon Blanc from its Marlborough wine region. But, look a little farther south and, near the city of Christchurch, you will find Pegasus Bay Winery tucked into the Waipara Valley (click here for more information).

On this hot August day, Mr. Donaldson poured a light selection including Riesling (of which 1/3 of the vineyard is dedicated – Love this Riesling and people that are dedicated to growing it), a savory yet crisp Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend (unlike the Sauv Blancs of Marlborough – think white Bordeaux), and two Pinot Noirs made of red/black fruit, earth and smoke that will titillate your palate and turn your opinion of New Zealand Pinots far to the better.
