This learning and tasting intensive program features important topics critical to the success of today’s wine professionals and savvy and educated consumers that are looking for the best wines and wine values that Texas, the fifth largest wine producing state, has to offer.

This class features visits from guests actively involved in the Texas industry. Lectures, guest presentations, wine tastings (of six wines provided to you from the Texas Wine School), Q&A, and the certification examination will be provided live via secure Zoom link. This arrangement makes it possible to sit the class/exam from anywhere in the state, or anywhere else you may be located (the first Specialist of Texas Wine was certified in California this past Spring).

Your instructor is class-creator Dr. Russ Kane, award-winning Texas writer, author and naturalist, and creator of VintageTexas.com. Paid students attending the course will receive a copy of Dr. Kane’s book, “The Wineslinger Chronicles: Texas on the Vine” that was made part of The Grover E. Murray Culture in the American Southwest book series. The first five students to sign up for the class will also receive Dr. Kane’s second book, “Texas Hill Country Wineries.”

The program exposes students to the unique landscapes of the major wine regions in Texas: Texas High Plains, Texas Hill Country, Texoma, Escondido Valley, and Davis Mountains AVAs, as well as non-AVA regions of East Texas and Gulf Coast.

This course will cover:

  • Important characteristics of each wine region, including location, geologic history, soils, climate and leading grape varieties grown in the region,
  • The evolution of Texas grape growing and winemaking from its early Spanish and immigrant European period (1600-1900) and early post-Prohibition (1940-1970) and modern periods (1970-present), with a focus on winemaking techniques and grape varieties,
  • The links and contrasts between Texas wines and their old & new world counterparts through lectures and guided tastings.

Love to taste, talk and tweet about Texas wines and where they are in the global scheme for wines. After all that's the only way they will reach the full potential.
