CHOW YouTube Video: Meet-up with Two Natural Winemen of Texas

YouTube Video: CHOW Tours Texas Wine Country

CHOW had a meet-up with Lewis Dickson and Terry Coturri at La Cruz de Comal Winery (Startzville, TX – www.lacruzdecomalwines.com). La Cruz de Comal is a collaboration between two long-time friends, California winemaker Tony Coturri and Texas lawyer and wine enthusiast, Lewis Dickson. Nic Coturri, Tony’s son, is instrumental to the harvest and crush, as is long-time Houston restaurateur, Bill Johnson, who also helps with sales.

La Cruz del Comal is located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, often referred to as “The Provence of Texas”. Limestone ledges can be seem from his vineyard. The small winery and case storage facility is actually buried in the limestone hillside near the town of Startzville, not far from Canyon Lake. From New Braunfels, the drive takes about 15 minutes.

La Cruz de Comal produces only authentic natural Texas wine from grapes conscientiously grown in the Texas Hill Country. We offer the real Texas “terroir” thing: Texas grapes, fermentations on natural yeasts, no additions of acid, sugar, grape concentrate, powdered tannins, artificial coloring agents, reverse osmosis or any other form of hocus-pocus. We have no interest in passing off grapes or wine foreign to Texas as being a product of Texas. Our passion embraces the age-old concept of “regionality” where food, wine and agriculture in general are concerned. With every step in the vineyard and every sip in the underground tasting room, you can sense Texas terroir.

I’ve known Lewis for about ten years as we have served on wine competition judging panel together and I had the chance in 2010 to visit this winery with a party arranged by Jeremy Parzen (www.dobianchi.com) that included noted food and wine writer and blogger, Alice Feiring (www.alicefeiring.com). Love to taste, talk and tweet about Texas wines and where they are in the global scheme for wines. After all that's the only way they will reach the full potential.
