Some of you may recall what I did during the hot heavy heat in the Summer of 2023. I stayed inside, set the AC at between 74F and 76F (just like a nice October day in Houston), and started opening my red wines. This year, we have already had our first 98F day earlier this week. So here we go again…. Let’s open some red wine for the first installment of VintageTexas’s Red Wines of Summer Series – 2024 Edition.
Well, today I’ve got something special and it might even be a little unexpected. The wine is called POWER – a 2018 Proprietary Red Blend, released by Kiepersol Estate Winery near Tyler, Texas. It’s a 100% estate-grown, single vineyard wine made from European Vitis vinifera wine grapes grown in East Texas.
This wine definitely packs a powerful statement. For starters, it has the power of 15 % alcohol that is expertly balanced, enveloped by juicy, dark fruit aromas, deep rich flavors, palate heft and well-structured tannins from extended oak aging. The character of the wine brings together jammy blackberry, boysenberry, plum, lavender, vanilla and pepper. Its bold presence comes through in spicy plum on the palate with strong tannins, and a toasty oak finish. This wine takes the Kiepersol reputation for making quality red wines and amps it up a notch, or maybe two.
Perhaps, if my AC wasn’t working as well as it is (and, unfortunately, after the recent storms, some people between Houston and Dallas are still without it), I might not have went ahead and opened this wine. I served it tonight with a dry aged prime New York Strip Steak. In my house, my mind is in a state of comfortable October coolness that also pairs well with this exceptional, full-bodied proprietary red blend.
There is another reason for calling this wine POWER.
