Texas Hill Country Wineries Tasting Stop: Glad to be Back for a Saint Tryphon Special Red

Glad to have another opportunity to taste the wines of Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyard. You’ll know why if you take a look at their website where it says, ”The winery, founded in 2016, rests on an 1890s Texas Hill Country homestead and is managed by proprietor, winemaker and sommelier Silouan Bradford. Silouan believes that the symbiosis of nature and nurture facilitate the milieu in which the most expressive wines come into being.

Well, today the ”Silouan Symbiosis” on which we will focus is one of his new red wines, and it comes at an opportune time. Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards is getting ready to celebrate the New Year and the release of their inaugural Brunello-clone Sangiovese – Hill Country Aglianico Red Blend that they’ve named “NORTH/SOUTH”.

Saint Tryphon ”NORTH – SOUTH”

This wine is a racy and savory red blend of two Texas appellations (Texas Hill Country and Texas High Plains) and two beautiful grape varieties (Sangiovese and Aglianico) well-suited for their respective terroirs. In both Italy and Texas, these two grapes represent regions North and South. It is a blend that you will not likely find in Italy (for legal reasons), but it can readily happen here in our wild west corner of the wine world.

Nothing like a spryly red wine on a sunny afternoon in the Texas hill country.

The aromas after the pour send a message of wet slate and dried berries. Bright, crisp red cherries punch through on the palate for this medium-bodied wine followed by a pleasing dry, desiccating finish that is destine to pair well with simply grilled meats of all kinds: fish, fowl and wild meats. One surprising paring for me with this wine was loin of cod with lemon, thyme, capers and pan roasted ripe-red cherry tomatoes.

The celebration for this wine and for the New Year will happen at the Saint Tryphon winery on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2023, from 12 noon to 5p CT, only a few days away. They will be serving Green Chile Pulled Pork Black-Eye Pea Stew while swinging with the jazzy tunes of Three Swings and a Miss (don’t miss the Miss: Noelle Goforth)!

Best of all, the weather looks like it will be AMAZING! A great day to wander the Texas Hill Country to a spot just a short hop north of Boerne for a stop at Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards. Click here to make your New Year’s Day tasting reservation.

Love to taste, talk and tweet about Texas wines and where they are in the global scheme for wines. After all that's the only way they will reach the full potential.
