Texas Hill Country Tasting Stop: Fiesta Winery for a Turquoise Moment and Spectacular Primitivo

Turquoise, the captivating green-blue stone of antiquity, the sign of wisdom, tranquility, protection, good fortune, and hope. Many people still believed in the profound power of Turquoise, the stone and the color on things around them, to protect and bring tranquil energy to their being.

Well, if your a turquoise believer, your next stop for a Texas wine tasting needs to be at Fiesta Winery. They have four locations around the state with their home turf in Lometa, TX, with a vineyard, winery and tasting room. Other tasting room locations include two in Fredericksburg, TX, one downtown along the street of shops, and one on Route 290 just east of town, with one more tasting room in Marble Falls, TX.

As you can see, all make you a captive in a sea of turquoise, from signage and labeling to long bar and a wine barrel toting pick up truck. It is the full immersion experience – you can feel the turquoise tranquility setting in and the good fortune and wine flowing.

Fiesta Winery in Lometa, Texas

In Lometa, as well as at the other Fiesta Winery locations, owners Stephen and Sally Baxter show a flair for bright-almost-fluorescent turquoise and catchy wine names.

You can try their seriously good dry wines alright, or you can have their laid back Back Porch Sittin’ sweet red, refreshing Skinny Dippin’ sweet white, or settle back with a Lime in the Coconut concoction. Today, at this tasting stop, our focus is definitely on the serious side of wine enjoyment with two of Fiesta Winery’s premium wines and recent medal winners: Fiesta Winery True Texan and their Primitivo.

Fiesta Winery 2018 True Texan and Primitivo

Fiesta Winery 2018 True Texan, Red Wine Blend, Texas High Plains – This wine is a 10th anniversary limited edition celebrating ten years of winery operation. It is an exciting blend of Primitivo, Tempranillo, Mourvèdre and Ruby Cabernet. In one word, it is ”Expressive”! It has lots of ripe black cherry flavor, cola notes with toasty/spicy aromas and tannic punch all integrated from 22 months in French and American Oak.

Fiesta Winery 2018 Primitivo, Texas High Plains – If you don’t know the grape variety Primitivo, this wine will make a good introduction. Primitivo is the red wine grape variety that, in many circles is also known as Zinfandel. It is the third-most planted grape in the southern Italian region of Puglia, and makes wines that are big, jammy, generally high in alcohol, and possess a rustic edge of chewy tannins, leaving you with a ripe sweet red fruit to the finish. While the Fiesta True Texan above gives you a sampling of Primitivo with other players, this wine is the “Full Monte”. It immediately offers luscious concentration of black raspberry preserves on the nose and palate with the tannins and alcohol (15.2% ABV) joining in at mid-palate producing an unctuously rich texture, and they all ride off into the sunset of a very long finish.
