Wine Drinking in Texas: Sampling Sojourn Wines from the Most Celebrated Vineyards in Sonoma and Napa at Houston’s Vault and Vino

Located in Sonoma, California, Sojourn Cellars was founded in 2001 by tennis buddies,
Craig Haserot and Erich Bradley, and is a small production, luxury, boutique winery that crafts high-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sojourn’s wines are made from grapes grown in some of the most respected vineyards in Sonoma and Napa regions. These wines are sold on allocation to mailing list members as well as a selection of high-end restaurateurs and retailers around the world.

I participated in a tasting of Sojourn Cellars wines at the new A-list, members-only wine storage and tasting venue, Vault & Vino. It’s open 24 hours a day seven days a week so members can always access their climate controlled wine collection.

It was my pleasure to taste several of the Sojourn Cellars wines shown below with an offering of my comments:

Sojourn Cellars NV Brut Sparking (Sonoma County)

This wine was bright and sassy with crisp apple and pear ending in enjoyable creaminess, and is made for celebrating just about anything that needs celebrating.

Sojourn Cellars 2021 Chardonnay, Sangiacomo Vineyard (Sonoma Coast)

This wine was made from a combination of Clone 95 and Old Wente Clone grapes with its smaller berry size, and whole-cluster pressed. The wine was concentrated and silky, accented with notes of citrus and apple integrated nuances of French oak.

Sojourn Cellars 2021 Pinot Noir, Sangiacomo Vineyard (Sonoma Coast)

The core clone in this wine is older vine Clone 115 with portions of Swan and Mt. Eden clones. The coolness of the vineyard site provides for this wine to have enjoyable natural acidity and red fruit and earthy nuances with a mild structure and makes this wine a value to enjoy often.

Sangiacomo Vineyard

Sojourn Cellars 2021 Pinot Noir, Gap’s Crown Vineyard (Sonoma Coast)

The wine is made from this iconic Sonoma Coast vineyard using Clone 115 supported by blocks planted with Clones 828 and 667. It provides ripe red berry and cherry aromas and flavors, medium body and elegant strength on the palate.

Sojourn Cellars 2021 Pinot Noir, UV Luck Well Vineyard (Sonoma Coast)

This wine comes from (Pommard and Vosne-Romannée Clone) grapes grown in this vineyard located on top of a knoll of Goldridge sandy-loam in the Sebastopol Hills. It yields a fruit richness and a full-bodied Pinot experience featuring excellent supporting tannic structure carrying notes of dark red fruits worthy of a special tasting experience.

Sojourn Cellars 2018 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5 liter bottle)

This blend is dominated by Oakville Ranch Vineyard and shows as a powerful, rich, structured wine in this 1.5 liter bottling. Wines made from two other nearby vineyards were blended in to add to the wines fruit character and build-up its tannic structure. The wine is rich and vibrant with vivid aromas/flavors of cassis, blackberry and mocha combined with pleasant acidity to keep it fresh through its long finish.

Love to taste, talk and tweet about Texas wines and where they are in the global scheme for wines. After all that's the only way they will reach the full potential.
