It’s almost time to close out the enrollment for the next Texas Wine Certification Class to be held starting September 21st on three consecutive Wednesdays and a one hour certification exam the day after the final class. This is the original and best Texas wine course. It is taught by Dr. Russell Kane, award-winning author and longest tenured Texas wine writer, who both reported on and personally experienced the rise in the Texas wine regions from only 30 post-prohibition wineries to over 400 wineries, many of which are now internationally recognized.

The Texas Wine School offers Dr. Kane’s Specialist of Texas Wine course as a first-of-its-kind program. It uniquely offers a comprehensive series of classes featuring the wines and wine regions of Texas. Never before has there been a wine program with classes specifically focused solely on Texas. According to Dr. Kane, ”When I assembled the materials for this class, my goal was to teach Texas and its wines in much the same manner I experienced while learning about Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa Valley. I focus on history, culture, climate, geology, and geography, as well as advances in viticulture and enology that have put Texas on the map of fine wine producing regions.”
As your instructor, Dr. Kane offers paid students attending the course a copy of his book, “The Wineslinger Chronicles: Texas on the Vine” that was selected as part of Texas Tech University Press book series, Grover E. Murray Culture in the American Southwest. The class also features guest presenters actively involved in Texas wineries. The information presented in these classes will provide great knowledge and working value to students in hospitality and service industries, wine distribution and sales, and tasting rooms. It will also be of great interest to knowledgeable consumers wanting an immersive Texas wine experience and detailed information on how and where to find the best Texas wines.
This course will cover:
- Details of each wine region, including location, geologic history, soils, climate and leading grape varieties grown in the region
- The evolution of Texas winemaking from its early Spanish and immigrant European period (1600-1800) and early post-Prohibition (1940-1990) and modern period (1990-present), with a focus on winemaking techniques and grape varieties
- The links and contrasts between Texas wines and their old & new world counterparts through lectures and guided tastings.
The course provides students with comprehensive slide set (in PDF) for each class in addition to study and reference materials, and tasting /discussion notes for the wines provided and tasted in the three classes. Upon successful completion, certification students will receive a certificate and lapel pin that will distinguish them among their peers, friends and associated.
