The White Wines of Bandol – Smaller Production Than The Reds, But Equally Interesting

Bandol AOC’s reputation is known far and wide both as one of the smaller appellations in France and also as a producer of sturdy red wine that often require substantial aging to reach their prime. These wines are often based around the region’s star performer – Mourvèdre.  But, Bandol winemakers also produce interesting white wines, but in much lesser quantities than their reds, and often they are regrettably overlooked.

Unbeknownst to many, the main white wine grapes on Bandol AOC are Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Ugni Blanc, but they are not the only ones. The remainder of the permitted grapes, usually referred to ‘secondary varieties’ include: Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Vermentino (known locally as Rolle).

According to the rules of Bandol AOC, the proportion of Clairette (the acknowledged best performing white of Bandol) is controlled and must be between 50 % and 95 % of the total.  The proportion of each of the secondary varieties (must be less than or equal to 10% with the combined total of all the secondary varieties less than or equal to 20%.

The White Wine Grapes of Bandol

What do each of the three main white grapes of Bandol offer in their blends:

Clairette – Provides structure with a stony mineral and complex signature with notes of green apple, citrus, peach, and stone fruit.

Bourboulenc – A rather late budding and ripening neutral grape without strong aromatic characteristics. However, when fully ripe, it adds body and depth.

Ugni Blanc – Brings sharp, refreshing acidity, keeping the richer Clairette lively and bright.

Of the secondary white grape varieties in Bandol most notable are the following two:

Vermentino (Rolle) – Adds an aromatic lift with notes of grapefruit and orchard fruit, plus a rounded mouthfeel.

Marsanne – Sometimes called the ‘Chardonnay of southern France’, it imparts extra weight and a richer, more weighty character as the wine matures.

Here are a few Bandol white wines you might find interesting and under the radar of most wine drinkers:

Domaine Tempier Bandol Blanc: Consistently the benchmark for the appellation, blending Clairette, Ugni Blanc, Bourboulenc, and small amounts of Marsanne/Rolle. Recent releases are acknowledged for their stony minerally character, delicate florals, and lightness on the palate.

Domaine de Terrebrune Bandol Blanc: Highly regarded for its chalky, calcareous nuances using a typical blend of Clairette, Bourboulenc and Ugni Blanc. Older releases have shown show incredible longevity in the bottle.

Domaine de l’Olivette Bandol Blanc: Awarded a prestigious Gold Medal at the General Agricultural Competition for its recent 2025 vintage. It offers fresh crisp notes of citrus, citrus blossom, with distinctive multifaceted nutty, flinty and saline characteristics.
