San Felice “In Avane” Chardonnay Toscana: An Unexpected Tuscan

Tuscany is undoubtedly famous for reds, its diverse terroirs… the hills around Montalcino and Chianti, produce world-class red wines. However, one grape variety not lacking for name recognition in other realms, when produced in the Tuscan hills unexpectedly showcases bright fruits, alongside unique mineral depth and floral aromas.

The grape is Chardonnay and, at the historic vineyard at San Felice, its name is “In Avane”, from “Avenal” the Etruscan name for this area of marl and limestone soils through which it traces its heritage.

The 2023 In Avane Chardonnay Toscana from San Felice harkens the ancient Etruscan culture known for its art and unique language. It defines a modern Etruscan experience embodied in the artistic creativity and language of wine. Based on my tasting, the In Avane Chardonnay focused on its pleasingly complex and persistent citrus-apple aromas and flavors with a toss of white flowers and light toasty notes on the nose, then following with minerals and crisp acidity on the palate through the finish.

The hand-harvested Chardonnay grapes once in the winery were cold macerated. Fermentation followed in a combination of chilled stainless steel tanks and a limited number of oak barrels that produced a barely perceptible “kiss” of oak without loosing the wine’s forward fruit presence in the glass. Prior to release, the wine was given a short bottle age to stabilize and retain the wines inherent freshness.

You can enjoy this vintage now and, if cellared, for at least five-plus years.  In Avane Chardonnay’s crisp acidity gives it the ability to age comfortably, helping to draw out certain more savory qualities.

This versatile wine can be served on many occasions by pairing it with rich fishes like salmon and Mediterranean bass, shellfish, lobster, creamy pasta or chicken dishes, or as a partner with fresh to medium-aged cheeses.

2023 San Felice In Avane Chardonnay

Rating: 91/100

Price: $33 (premium yet affordable range) available in most US domestic markets.

Comment: Good buy as a mineral-driven Italian Chardonnay recommended for non-oaky white wine lovers.

With this wine, I welcome you to the Tuscany that some are now calling a “new member of the A-list Chardonnay Fraternity.” In the modern Tuscany, all I can say is to be ready for the unexpected.
