Periwinkle Foundation Provides A First-Hand View of Sommeliers’ Thirst for Competition

Thirst of Competition: Periwinkle Hosts Premier Sommelier Competition and Wine Tasting Event

Iron Sommelier Presented by AUTOSOL® Returns to Houston on November 9

WHAT:

Houston’s finest sommeliers will be put to the test at The Houstonian at 6 p.m this Thursday evening. Come and see it first-hand what interesting things that the “Thirst of Competition” will bring in the rivalry for the title of Iron Sommelier in the city’s premier wine competition and fundraiser benefiting The Periwinkle Foundation. It will be a 10th anniversary celebration. Wine Chair Sean Beck and Sommelier Chair John Clutterbuck invite guests to an evening showcasing the expertise of 14 sommeliers while guests mingle and taste hand-selected wines showcasing carefully prepared themes by each sommelier. Competitors will be rated on wine choice, presentation, creativity and knowledge of their wine selections.

Somms on hand will include: Adele Corrigan – 13 celsius Wine Bar; Matt Crawford – State of Grace; Jane-Paige B. D’Huyvetter – River Oaks Country Club; Chris Fleischman – Riel; Sam Governale – Emmaline; Lexey Johnson – B&B Butchers & Restaurant; Brandon Kerne – Pappas Bros. Steakhouse; Brenna LeClair – Sonoma Wine Bar – Upper Kirby, Sonoma in the Heights; Thomas Moësse – Vinology Bottle Shop & Tasting Bar, divino Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar; Matthew Pridgen – One Fifth, Underbelly; Samantha Porter – Oporto Fooding House, Oporto Wine Cafe, Queen Vic Pub & Kitchen; Shepard Ross – MadCat Hospitality; Evan Turner – Helen Greek Food and Wine, Helen in the Heights.

We are also excited to share that the 14th sommelier has just been confirmed. TEXSOM 2017 Somm Competition winner Andres Blanco from Caracol will join to compete for Periwinkle’s Iron Sommelier.

Underwriters can experience private tasting presentations by each 2017 competing sommelier in the Grand Tasting Room or indulge in a four-course tasting menu by James Beard Award-winning chefs paired with rare wines hand-selected by past Iron Sommelier winners in the Champions Tasting Room.
