Jennifer Beckmann has been around the Texas Hill Country for some time gaining experience and insights with every new opportunity she’s been presented. But, there is one thought that has been on her mind for some time now. After many years of traveling and pulling up roots to move somewhere new, what’s been on her mind is planting roots. Jennifer wanted a permanent winery location of her own creation, especially an urban winery creation, and community to plant her personal roots, and plant them permanently.
I knew Jennifer was working on an urban winery project when Covid hit and I had heard that she even got it started somewhere in San Antonio, but I didn’t really know where it was located. Last week, I traveled to San Antonio on business, a convention actually, housed in the ginormous downtown Gonzalez Conventional Center just north of the looming Tower of the Americas. Well, little did I know that right next to this “needle in the sky” was Jennifer Beckmann’s ReRooted210 Urban Winery. So, at the end of my business day of meetings, I gathered several of my fellow convention goers and we made our way out back of the convention center to sample some of Jennifer’s urban wines at her ReRooted 210.
We arrived at ReRooted 210 and were greeted by Jennifer’s rosy-cheeked face and everpresent smile encouraging us to sit at a grouping of comfortable sofa and chairs. Wanting to sample a variety of wines, we all opted for a menu tasting selection involving two-ounce pours of four Texas wines for $10…. a real deal.
The first two wines were whites: Cable Car, a proprietary blend with an aromatic and zesty presence in the glass composed of 55% Roussanne & 45% Viognier, then a varietal Roussanne with a classic minerally lemon drop and green tea composure.
This was followed by two reds: a varietal Mourvèdre with light body and red berry aromas, very Pinotesque, then another proprietary blend called Riverwalk based on a multivarietal, multivintage Tempranillo blend.
While some of the wines were conventionally bottle, Jennifer takes great pride in the Texas wines that she pours on tap from chilled kegs. The reasons for her pride in this process is that it both keeps the wines at a “just-opened” freshness while also doing away with the expense and waste of glass bottles.
My group consisted of both Texans and non-Texans, some of which had their first taste of Texas wine that evening. And, you know what? They all acknowledged as we went our different ways that they had a premium and fulfilling wine experience – not just a TEXAS WINE experience, but a REALLY ENJOYABLE WINE experience.
