What I’m Reading Tonight: Texas Monthly – Working Life Feature on Neal Newsom

From my decade or more covering the Texas wine industry, I believe that there just couldn’t be a more deserving person for this feature in Texas Monthly but Neal Newsom.

The man’s been around and through with alternative crops on the Texas high plains. He’s tried peanuts to pumpkins and when a college professor, Dr. Roy Mitchell, told him to try wine grapes, Neal did just that and the rest is history.  Well, actually, its been some good years separated by a few late spring frosts, hard winter freezes, a pounding or two with hail, incessant wind, and the occasional dust storm or two or three. However, its been grit (no pun) and determination that have lead Neal, his wife Janice and son Nolan, to grow some of the best darn grapes this State of Texas has to offer. Newsom Vineyards is a name that’s featured in the premium wine programs of many of the best Texas wineries. If someone said Newsom, the next words out of their mouth were usually Cabernet and now it’s Tempranillo, Orange Muscat and more.

Neal’s vineyard near Plains, Texas, may be on the fringes of the modern wine world (the red dirt reminds me more of the Mariner photos from Mars than wine country), but it does produce quality fruit from the Texas High Plains AVA that just about any winery in American would love and be honored to receive.

Love to taste, talk and tweet about Texas wines and where they are in the global scheme for wines. After all that's the only way they will reach the full potential.
