Does Governor Perry have aTexas Wine Favorite?

After Governor Rick Perry participated in the grand opening ceremonies at the National Museum of the Pacific War open on Monday, December 7, 2009, he made one last stop before returning to Austin. It was at Becker Vineyards where he purchased wine for his son’s rehearsal dinner.
According to Dr. Richard Becker owner of Becker Vineyards, “Governor Perry called and said that he wanted to purchase five cases of Reserve Malbec and three cases of Sauvignon Blanc and would be by on Monday to pick up his order.”
Becker currently grows wine grapes on 46 acres in his vineyard in Stonewall, Texas and 26 acres in Ballinger.
Becker winemaker Russell Smith said, “We also purchase grapes from other grape growers. The grapes used for the Reserve Malbec came from the Drew Tallent Vineyards in Mason.” Mason County is in the Texas Hill Country Viticultural Area.
Tallent, a peanut farmer, started grape growing by planting vines ten years ago as an alternative crop.
Perry’s wine purchase from Becker Vineyards continues his apparent appreciation of the wines of Becker Vineyards. At the Governor’s Inauguration in 2003, the Becker Viognier was served at the Inaugural Ball to and Perry also serves Becker Chardonnay and Claret in the Governor’s Mansion.
