Actually, it is a win-win-win situation:

1. The hunt actually does reduce the number of snakes and the incidences of snake bites on the ranches in the area.

2. Secondly, the snakes are milked for their venom and the meat is prepared for eating at the event and sold to take home.

3. The hunt is run by the local Jaycees who raise money for scholarships and social programs in the Sweetwater area.

The chaps are actually not that heavy in terms of weight. It was easy to walk and manuever around while wearing them.

My wife and I bought them online on some outfitter website.

I noticed in the top picture you were wearing some snake proof chaps it looks like? I have always used the snake proof gaiters, but have heard good things about the chaps? Are they really heavy? because that is my major fear is that there going to be so heavy I won't have the mobility I do when I use the gaiters.

Nice way to mess with the ecosystem and try and justify your actions. Now lets tell these kind people the truth about roundups, how they are not needed, how they are doing more damage than harm.
I cannot condone the killing of any animal for redneck fun and profit, sorry.

Russ and Delia---what a pleasure it was to meet and hunt rattlesnakes with you in Sweetwater! We had a lot of fun, and caught a few rattlers, to boot. Sorry I missed your wine tasting event. Had to get back to Round Rock, a four-hour plus drive, but now wish I'd stayed. Your photos are posted at

http://bugsinthenews.info/?p=747

My wife is sorry she wasn't present to meet you both. Perhaps we can get together later.

[...] The dinner for 80 (at Trattoria Lisina) for 80 was spot on- great food, great wine, lots of friendly folk out in wine country. You have to experience it to believe it. The other day I got a call from my son wanting me to come out and visit him, near Marble Falls. “You won’t believe it, Pop, it looks like California or Italy out here in the vineyards.” I’m a believer, up until the point comes when it’s 100°F and humidity at 85% and snakes start slithering around between the vines.
